선화랑은 8월 26일부터 9월 29일까지 ”범생명적 초월주의“ 그룹전시를 개최합니다. 1990년 11월, 미술평론가 임두빈의 주창으로 시작된 이 미술운동은 단지 화단의 새로운 유파가 아니었습니다. 1970년대 극단적 추상이 잃어버린 대중과의 소통과 1980년대 참여미술이 갇혀 있던 좁은 유물주의적 시각, 그 양쪽을 모두 넘어서 존재를 물질이 아닌 생명으로 바라보자는 새로운 인식의 선언이었습니다. 갤러리아 미술관 창립전을 시작으로 다섯 차례의 그룹전과 거리의 퍼포먼스를 통해 ‘생명가치 회복’이라는 화두를 1990년대 한국 미술계의 한복판에 던졌고, 이후 다다이즘의 발상지인 취리히 카바레 볼테르에 초대되어 《초월-동방의 빛》전을 선보이며 국제적으로도 그 의미를 알렸습니다. 서구 사조의 수용이 아니라 한국인의 독자적인 철학적 성찰에서 태어난 자생적 미술운동이라는 점에서 그 의미는 시간이 갈수록 더 또렷해지고 있습니다. 30여 년이 흐른 오늘 갈등과 분열, 기술의 가속 속에서 “나와 우주는 생명의 끈으로 연결되어 있다”는 초월주의의 물음은 다시 현재를 향합니다. 존재를 차가운 물질이 아닌 장엄하고 신비로운 생명으로 바라보며, 예술을 통해 생명의 가치와 존엄을 환기합니다.
SunGallery presents the group exhibition CHO WEOL JU EUI (Panvital Transcendentalism), on view from August 26 to September 29, 2026. Initiated in November 1990 by art critic Im Doo-Bin, this movement was never merely a new school within the Korean art world. It was a declaration of a new way of seeing: one that sought to move beyond both the loss of communication with the public brought about by the extreme abstraction of the 1970s and the narrow materialist perspective that constrained the socially engaged art of the 1980s. At its heart was a proposition to understand existence not as matter, but as life. Beginning with its inaugural exhibition at Galleria Art Museum, the movement brought the idea of “restoring the value of life” into the heart of the Korean art scene of the 1990s through five group exhibitions and public performances. It was later invited to Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, the birthplace of Dada, where the exhibition Transcendence: Light of the East introduced its ideas to an international audience. Rather than emerging from the adoption of Western artistic movements, CHO WEOL JU EUI was born from an independent philosophical reflection rooted in Korea. With the passage of time, the significance of this self-generated artistic movement has become ever clearer. More than three decades later, amid an era marked by conflict, division, and accelerating technological change, the idea that “I and the universe are connected by the thread of life” once again speaks to the present. CHO WEOL JU EUI views existence not as cold matter, but as a profound and mysterious manifestation of life, seeking through art to reaffirm the value and dignity of life within the cosmos.
