김정수 작가는 진달래꽃을 통해 한국인의 정서를 그리는 서정적 회화로 널리 알려진 예술가이다.1955년생인 그는 홍익대학교 미술대학에서 회화를 전공하고, 1983년 프랑스로 도불하여 파리의 헤이터 판화공방에서 수학했다. 초기에는 입체 및 전위 예술, 비구상 작업에 집중하며 국제 미술계에 발을 들였고, 문명 비판적인 주제를 담은 평면작업으로 주목을 받으며, 프랑스 영주권을 취득했습니다. 그러나 귀국 중 한국가요 <애모>를 듣고 한국적 정체성을 되새기게 된 중요한 계기가 되어, '한국인의 마음을 움직이는 작업'을 결심하게 되었다.
이후 그는 진달래꽃을 주요 소재로 삼아, '이 땅의 어머님들을 위하여', '기억의 저편', '축복' 그리고 대표 시리즈인 ‘진달래-축복’ 시리즈를 이어왔다. 작가의 그림은 진달래꽃을 매개로 어머니를 그리워하는 것이고, 기억 저편으로부터 그 그리움을 소환하는 것이며, 생전 어머니의 축복을 오마주한 것이다. 그리고 그 어머니는 동시에 우리 모두의 어머니이기도 할 것이다. 더불어 그 어머니는 부재하면서 존재하는, 어쩌면 저마다의 마음속에 고이 간직된 그리움의 원형이며 존재의 원형이기도 할 것이다.
진달래를 매개로 어머니를 향한 그리움, 기억, 존재의 원형을 따뜻하게 풀어내며, 화면을 가득 메운 꽃잎은 보는 이에게 위로와 희망을 전달한다. 이러한 회화는 어머니에 대한 오마주이자, 한국인의 정체성과 미감을 담은 독창적인 시각적 언어로 자리매김하였다. 또한 근래에는 미디어 아트를 통해 정지된 꽃바구니 속 진달래가 영상으로 살아 움직이며, 세대와 시대를 아우르는 감동을 선사하고 있다. 김정수의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 삼성인력개발원 창조관, 서울대병원, 미국 뱅크 오브 아메리카, 프랑스 카르푸 등 국내외 다양한 기관에 소장되어 있으며, 서울 선화랑, 파리 갤러리 발메, 도쿄 기쿠타 갤러리, 미국 CJ 갤러리 등에서 다수의 개인전과 단체전을 개최했다.
Jungsoo KIM (b.1955) is a widely recognized artist known for his lyrical paintings that depict the emotional sensibilities of the Korean people through azalea flowers. He studied painting at Hongik University and moved to France in 1983, where he trained at Atelier 17, the renowned printmaking studio in Paris. In his early career, he focused on three-dimensional and avant-garde art as well as non-figurative work, entering the international art scene with pieces that often carried a critical perspective on civilization. His unique artistic language and subject matter earned him French permanent residency.
However, during a return visit to Korea, he experienced a profound turning point while listening to the Korean song Aemo (Yearning), which led him to reawaken a sense of Korean identity and to dedicate himself to creating work that “moves the hearts of the Korean people.”
Since then, he has focused on azalea flowers as his primary motif, producing series such as For the Mothers of This Land, Beyond Memory, Blessing, and his representative Azalea – Blessing series. Through the symbol of the azalea, he evokes longing for the mother figure, calling forth that longing from the depths of memory, and paying homage to the blessings received during her lifetime. This mother figure, in his work, becomes not only his own but a universal mother—a symbolic and archetypal presence held dearly in the hearts of many.
By using azaleas as a medium, he gently unfolds themes of maternal longing, memory, and the origin of existence. The canvases, filled with blooming petals, convey comfort and hope to viewers. His paintings serve both as a tribute to motherhood and as a unique visual language that embodies Korean identity and aesthetics. In recent years, he has extended this expression into media art, where the once-still azalea blossoms come alive in moving images, offering emotional resonance across generations and eras.
Jungsoo KIM’s works are housed in numerous public and private collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Korea), Samsung Human Resources Development Center, Seoul National University Hospital, Bank of America (USA), and Carrefour (France). He has held solo and group exhibitions at venues such as Sun Gallery (Seoul), Galerie Valmay (Paris), Kikuta Gallery (Tokyo), and CJ Gallery (USA), continuing to expand his poetic and emotionally resonant artistic world.
