Sun Gallery presents Bright Moon, the first solo exhibition in Korea by Chilean-born, London-based artist Sebastián Espejo (b. 1990, Viña del Mar). The exhibition features 18 paintings in oil, wax, and marble dust on wood, canvas, and calico, created between 2023 and 2026.
The title takes its name from Hwang Jin-i (황진이), the celebrated Korean poet whose sijo verse serves as a central motif throughout the exhibition. Espejo's practice centres on painting as a form of attention: exploring the language of painting in relation to the natural world, living organisms, visual experience, and the perception of light.
Working across intimate scales, Espejo builds layered compositions that oscillate between figure and ground, permanence and impermanence. Objects from daily walks, fragments of memory, and references spanning Hokusai's sketchbooks to Gauguin's Tahitian drawings converge in works that read as meditations on the act of seeing itself.
Espejo's recent international exhibitions include presentations at Frieze New York (via Union Pacific), Interval London, and Draper & Co., Paris. His work is held in the collections of Wildenstein, X Museum, and the Drumlanrig Collection, among others. He is represented internationally by Union Pacific (London) and exclusively in Korea by Sun Gallery.
