From September 1 to 7, 2025, Sun Gallery will present a special exhibition of abstract artist Chungji Lee (1943–2021) on the third floor of its Insadong space. Organized alongside Lee’s presentation at the Masters sector of Frieze Seoul and as part of the 2025 Seoul Art Week, the show is a small retrospective that focuses on the 1980s and 1990s, a pivotal period before she developed her distinctive language of Calligraphic Abstraction.
In the 1980s, Lee worked with earthy monochromes and bold physical gestures. She rolled and scraped layers of paint across the canvas, leaving behind traces of repeated actions and the passage of time. Her Untitled and Zero series make the act of painting visible, balancing physical presence with flatness. In the 1990s, she began introducing text-like lines and expanding her palette, opening a new phase in her work.
At the center of this exhibition is the MURUE series, a term combining the French mur (wall) and rue (street). These works reflect the experience of confronting life’s barriers while searching for a path forward. They embody Lee’s philosophy of uniting matter and spirit, surface and depth.
Recognized for her bold and original vision through both international biennales and solo exhibitions, Lee’s art transcends the boundaries of time and gender. Her large-scale canvases still carry the strength of her resilient spirit. With a focus on the MURUE series from the 1990s, this exhibition reintroduces Jungji Lee’s abstract world and its enduring message of integration, one that continues to resonate today.
2025년 9월 1일부터 7일까지 인사동 선화랑 3층 전시장에서 추상화가 이정지(1943–2021)의 특별 전시가 열립니다. 이번 전시는 Frieze Seoul 마스터즈 섹터 출품과 함께 2025 Seoul Art Week의 일환으로 마련된 소규모 회고전으로, 작가가 1980–90년대에 남긴 대표적 작업을 선보입니다. 이 시기는 이정지가 이후 독창적인 ‘서예적 추상(Calligraphic Abstraction)’으로 나아가기 전, 중요한 전환점을 보여주는 시기입니다.
1980년대 이정지의 작품은 흙빛 단색조와 신체적인 제스처가 특징적입니다. 롤러로 물감을 덧칠하고 칼로 긁어낸 화면에는 반복된 행위의 흔적과 시간이 켜켜이 쌓여 있습니다. Untitled와 Zero 연작은 행위의 시각화를 통해 회화의 신체성과 평면성을 동시에 드러냅니다. 1990년대에 들어서면서 그는 문자 형상의 선을 화면에 도입하고, 색채의 범위를 확장했습니다.
이번 전시의 중심인 MURUE 시리즈는 프랑스어 mur(벽)과 rue(길)을 합성한 조어로, 삶의 벽을 마주하고 그 너머의 길을 모색하는 여정을 상징합니다. 이는 물질과 정신, 표면과 심연의 통합을 지향한 작가의 철학을 집약한 작업입니다. 국내외 비엔날레와 개인전을 통해 대담하고 독창적인 시도로 주목받은 이정지의 예술은 시대와 성별의 경계를 넘어섭니다. 거대한 화면 속에 응축된 그의 강인한 정신은 지금도 생생히 살아 숨 쉬고 있습니다. 선화랑은 이번 전시를 통해 1990년대 대표작 MURUE 시리즈를 중심으로 작가의 추상세계를 다시 조명하며, 오늘날에도 여전히 유효한 ‘통합의 메시지’를 전하고자 합니다.
