선화랑은 한국 유일의 여성 단색조 추상작가 이정지(1941–2021)의 작품을 Frieze Seoul Masters 섹터에서 선보입니다. 이번 전시는 그녀의 대표적 전환기였던 1980–90년대 주요 작품에 초점을 맞추며, 이후 그녀의 독창적인 ‘서체 추상(Calligraphic Abstraction)’으로 나아가는 중요한 단초를 보여줍니다. 1980년대 이정지의 작업은 흙빛 단색조와 물리적인 제스처가 특징입니다. 롤러로 물감을 덧칠하고 칼로 긁어낸 화면에는 반복된 행위의 흔적과 시간의 축적이 고스란히 담겨 있습니다. Untitled 및 Ο 시리즈는 행위의 시각화를 통해 신체성과 평면성을 함께 드러냅니다. 1990년대에 들어서며 그녀는 화면에 문자 형상의 선을 도입하고 색채 범위를 확장하였습니다. 이번 전시의 핵심인 MUⓇUE 시리즈는 프랑스어 ‘mur(벽)’과 ‘rue(길)’를 합성한 조어로, 삶의 벽을 마주하고 그 너머의 길을 모색하는 인간의 여정을 상징합니다. 이는 물질과 정신, 표면과 심연의 통합이라는 작가의 철학을 집약한 작품입니다. 국내외 비엔날레와 개인전을 통해 독창성과 대담함으로 주목받았던 이정지의 예술은 시대와 성별의 경계를 초월하며, 그녀의 강인한 정신은 대형 회화 속에 여전히 생생히 살아 있습니다. 선화랑은 이번 프리즈 서울 마스터즈 섹터에서 그녀의 1990년대 대표작 《MUⓇUE》 시리즈를 중심으로 작가의 예술세계를 조명하고, 현사회에도 필요한 통합의 메시지를 담은 추상 세계를 선보입니다.
Sun Gallery proudly presents a solo show of Chungji Lee (1941–2021), the only Korean female abstract painter to have consistently pursued monochromatic painting over decades. This focused presentation highlights her most pivotal works from the 1980s and 1990s, a transitional period that laid the foundation for her distinctive "calligraphic abstraction." Lee's 1980s works are defined by their earthy monochrome palette and gestural techniques. Using rollers and knives, she layered, scraped, and marked the canvas, creating surfaces that merge physical action with meditative depth. Her Untitled and Ο series from this period embody the “visualization of action,” merging pigment and gesture into corporeal flatness. In the 1990s, Lee introduced script-like forms and a broader range of color. Her MUⓇUE series on view at Frieze demonstrates her evolution toward a more symbolic and philosophical abstraction. The coined term MUⓇUE (mur: wall, rue: street) reflects her enduring theme of transcendence bridging obstacles and seeking paths beyond them. These works epitomize her belief in the integration of matter and spirit, surface and depth. Critically acclaimed in international biennales and solo shows, Lee’s art defied gendered expectations and conventional styles, standing as a unique voice in Korean modernism. Though she passed away in 2021, her bold vision and spiritual force live on in her monumental canvases offering timeless reflections on life, struggle, and resolution. Sun Gallery presents her iconic 1990s MUⓇUE series, highlighting the depth of her artistic vision and showcasing an abstract world imbued with a timeless message of integration, still relevant in today’s society.
